The Basics of the Studio-Based Learning Approach

The class follows the Studio-Based Learning approach. This means that the class:

  • Is project-oriented, where the project has multiple possible solutions and has been segmented into smaller project segments that will eventually lead to a complete project;
  • Involves, at the end of each stage, sessions of constructive criticism and comments by colleagues, the teacher, and external experts; and
  • Affords each student the option of resubmitting their assignments, after they have received feedback.

As the Figure below illustrates, at the beginning of each project segment, each student works on her/his assignment individually and submits it for assessment by the lecturer - this sub- mission is compulsory. After submission, each student’s assignment is presented and critically reviewed by the student’s group members. After the review session the student has the option to resubmit his assignment, oblitera- ting the previously submitted assignment. The students then join forces and work as a team towards the project goal that they submit for assessment as a group. The group assignment can also be submitted after it is presented.
