About the module

This Service Design module is part of the Masters programme in Design and Multimedia available at the Department of Informatics Engineering, within the University of Coimbra. The module aims to develop in students the knowledge and understanding of the current techniques involved in the creation of a Service Design experience, from the understanding and application of its practices and models to the development and validation of intended service experiments created for a specific context. The class follows a Studio-Based Learning approach (click here to know more).

About this year’s project

About this year’s project

The theme of this years’ project brief is ‘Reimagining the future of health and care services’. The goal is to apply a Service Design approach to develop proposals of innovative solutions for health and care services. The starting points are the challenges of Digital Transformation and the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 United Nations Agenda, in particular Goal 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.

To improve health and care services is a complex problem. Not only do solutions need to respond to an increasing demand on health and care services, as there are also major economic and social problems to simultaneously consider. This being said, the identification of solutions for this context is not trivial and requires the involvement of all. Students are then expected to dialogue, interact, and work with people who experience health and care services challenges on a daily basis, from healthcare professionals and managers to end-users, to reimagine the future and co-create solutions.

E-book and templates

E-book and templates

To introduce students to the tools of Service Design, the lecturer created a toolbox of tailored activities and templates that could afford students to work collaboratively from anywhere, for as long as they had computer and Internet access. As a result, an e-book and a set of digital templates were created.

The e-book brings together a collection of hands-on activities specifically created to support the weekly activities planned for the class. The step-by-step instructions to each activity that can be found in the e-book are meant to be used in combination with the digital templates.
